About Me
As a candidate for the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, my story is one of ocean legends and hardworking immigrants, a tale of two worlds that have shaped my vision for our islands’ future.
The sea runs deep in my veins, inherited from my mother, JoAnne, and her family, the Kahanamoku’s.
Legends like my great uncle, Duke Paoa Kahanamoku, a four-time Olympic swimming star, and my grandfather, Sam Alapai Kahanamoku, a Paris Olympics freestyle sprinter, have left a legacy of strength and connection with our Hawaiian waters.
My mother’s journey on the Hōkūleʻa and her passion for the ancient art of featherwork taught me the importance of our cultural identity and our sacred bond with nature.
From my father, George Hitoshi Teruya, I learned the values of diligence and community from an early age. Raised in Kalihi with Okinawan roots, he propelled himself from working on a family piggery farm to owning a beloved local business, known to many as Eagle’s Café. His life story is a testament to resilience and the power of dreaming big for the sake of our community.
My connection to the sea and my commitment to hard work and community has greatly influenced my journey. They have given me a deep appreciation for our heritage, our environment, and the importance of serving our communities with unwavering commitment. Therefore, “Navigating Forward for the Future” stands as the central pillar of my campaign.
As I run for OHA, I am guided by these principles: honoring our history, while boldly charting a new course for the benefit of many generations to come.
Join me in this journey to bridge our cherished traditions with the possibilities of tomorrow. Together, we can craft a future filled with hope, rooted in respect and love for our beautiful Hawai’i.
Mahalo for your support.
